Old electric locomotive HGe 2/2
at Wendelstein

15 and 17 June 2021

Old electric locomotive HGe 2/2 at Wendelstein

Old electric locomotive HGe 2/2 at Wendelstein

After our quickly sold out Wendelstein tours 2020, we also offer the opportunity to travel with us to the Wendelstein in 2021 and to experience the last operational old electric locomotives from the founding period of the railroad in operation and to put them spectacularly in the picture. Even the longest journey is worth it.

The Wendelsteinbahn (WZB) currently owns two operational electric locomotives from the early years of the railroad, which are now over 100 years old. Their final decommissioning can be expected at any time, especially since a new locomotive has been ordered in the meantime. The old locomotives, HGe 2/2, are currently only used for supply runs, which, moreover, usually take place before the start of operation of the railroad.

The HGe 2/2 of the WZB were built between 1911 and 1935 in a total of four copies and were in service almost daily from 1912 until the beginning of 1991, apart from the winter shutdown. In spring 1991, the four old electric locomotives were replaced by two modern railcars, which made the trip to the summit in less than half the time. After the withdrawal of the electric locomotives from scheduled passenger service, HGe 2/2 1 went into the vehicle collection of the German Museum - it is now in the Lokwelt Freilassing. HGe 2/2 4 had to retire from service at the beginning of 2020 after severe damage to the electrical section. The two remaining locomotives 2 and 3 are still in service for work trains, for the supply train of the hotel and the broadcasting station as well as for the WZB's own moonlight nostalgia trips. However, the end of these interesting vehicles is already foreseeable, at least in construction train service and for the supply train. A few months ago, the Wendelsteinbahn ordered a new four-axle electric locomotive, which will largely correspond to the E19 of the Zugspitzbahn. It will largely replace the old locomotives.

In June 2021, we will offer 2 trips per operating day, one before the start of operations and the last one after the end of operations. The date was deliberately set for the longest days of the year in order to make the best use of the light. As, usual with Tanago, all participants ride in the train and get off at the most beautiful stretches of the railroad and take pictures. Since we are in the high mountains, surefootedness and absoute discipline of the participants is required. Partly we put the train only in one place and take turns photographing, so the event is designed mainly for photographers.

Our program starts already at 5:00 am at the station Brannenburg station. There will be a briefing and safety instruction of the participants. Sturdy shoes and surefootedness in the mountains are essential for this tour. The instructions of the guides are to be followed, violations will result in immediate exclusion from the event. Departure of our train is at 5:15 am.

Our photo train will consist of a HG2e 2/2 (either locomotive 2 or locomotive 3) with the original two-axle cars of the Wendelsteinbahn from the early years of the railroad.

After the morning shots with the HGe 2/2, we spend the day taking pictures of the plan trains in the summit area. In the evening after closing time, another train runs for us. Now we take pictures which are only possible from above on the longest days of the year. After dark, we head downhill with our photo train.

Tour price and special conditions for participation in the photo tour:

June 15, 2021 - per participant the photo tour with a HGe 2/2 and the two-axle cars of the WZB costs 210 Euro.
