Germany: Steep sections in the Rhine Valley
Steam clouds over the Brohltal
On Friday, September 11th and Saturday, September 12th, 2020, the steam locomotive 11SM (the only steam locomotive of the Brohl Valley Railway that is more than 100 years old and the only one that has been preserved to this day) and the diesel locomotive D 5 (small V 160) will travel on the Brohl Valley Railway from the harbour along the entire route, including the steep section, up to Engeln. Since the steam locomotive is not allowed to drive on the steep line at the moment, we use the diesel locomotive D5 there with a narrow-gauge regular freight train with containers, which is unique in Germany.

The Brohltal tour program:
On Friday, September 11, 2020, the diesel locomotive D5 (small V160) will be covering a mixed train with modern container wagons and a passenger car for our transport. We watch the loading of the containers at the reloading station in Brohl-Lützing and from there we drive through the scenic Brohl valley via Brohl station. Via the impressive Brohl valley viaduct in Tönisstein and the adjacent tunnel we first drive to Oberzissen. From there, the steep route to Brenk leads to the phonolite quarry with its loading station. After our train has been shunted there and loaded, it then goes back to Brohl and then to the harbour. On the way many photo stops are possible to take pictures or film this narrow-gauge regular freight traffic with containers, which is unique in Germany.
On Saturday, September 12, 2020, the steam locomotive 11sm of the Brohl Valley Railway, which is over 100 years old and the only one that has survived to this day, will be covering a passenger train on the route from Brohl to Oberzissen and back. The return trip takes us to the harbour, where some more nice photo motives are possible. Due to the changed steep track regulations in Rhineland-Palatinate, it is unfortunately not possible to travel the steep track with the steam locomotive.
For lunch there are suitable possibilities in Oberzissen.
